Welcome to
Ride the Waves Counselling with Lynn Hickman

I am Lynn and I have been working as a counsellor for a number of years. People come for counselling for lots of reasons, but commonly feel that they are struggling to cope, feel anxious or upset, or want to explore how past events may be affecting them in the present.

While I have supported clients through a wide range of problems - bereavement, job loss, separation or divorce, work stress, anxiety, and health concerns, my particular area of expertise is working with bullying (past or present), abuse and trauma. You may be finding relationships difficult, or have been trying to put things right, but nothing seems to change? Do you find yourself speaking and behaving in certain ways that feel uncomfortable for you but which you hope will help you to ‘fit in’ or keep the peace? Maybe you have now reached a point where you’d really like things to change but you are not sure about what else you can do to make this happen?

These feelings and behaviours can be a common response where relationships go wrong and we feel belittled, excluded, bullied or abused by others. Even years after the event, these things can adversely impact our health and relationships. Workplace bullying can be particularly difficult, leaving us feeling bad about ourselves, anxious, finding it hard to switch off and maybe even worried about our economic survival. This in turn can lead to tensions at home, adding to the stress we feel. Bullying and abuse can leave us feeling lonely, isolated, confused and perhaps that we may somehow be at fault. We may long for relationships with others, yet may also fear rejection.

Why might I be the right counsellor for you? I have a lot of life experience under my belt. I have also had counselling myself, and found it really helped me to make sense of what had happened to me, how it had affected me and  enabled me to become more confident in how I respond to people and situations. .  I hold an MA in Counselling and my research dissertation examined how therapy can help those who have been bullied.  I am a trauma-informed practitioner, holding a recognised Certificate in Trauma Focused Therapy. I am trained in a number of therapeutic approaches on which I can draw to help you explore your concerns in ways that feel the most comfortable for you. Creating a warm and supportive therapeutic relationship is central in my work.

All these things have shaped my approach to counselling.  Clients have told me that I am understanding, that they feel safe with me and that they can tell me anything without fear of judgement.

If you would like to take the next step and explore counselling with me, I offer a free 30 minute consultation on Zoom so we can decide if we are a ‘good fit’.

I will work alongside you to help you navigate the rough seas and to help you move forward in your life.

I am based in Cobham, Surrey but can work online with clients across the UK.

Whatever you are faced with, I'm here to support you when the seas of life become choppy. Why not consider a free, no obligation,  30 minute online session?

Consultations

I practice with a Christian ethos although I welcome those of other faiths and of no faith. I work in a supportive way to enable you to explore what is happening in your life in a safe, empathic and non-judgemental way to help you seek and find calmer waters. I am trained as an integrative counsellor, which means that I am able to draw on a variety of approaches to work in ways which are comfortable for you, including using creative interventions. I will be led by you, giving you control over our work together.

My consultations are provided online using the popular Zoom video meeting service. I appreciate that on occasions it may not be possible for you to meet on on Zoom in which case I can provide consultations using WhatsApp for a more discreet consultation.

I can work with clients both in the UK and abroad (with the exception of the United States of America and Canada).
